Overview

Discovery Fundamentals is a three-day instructor-led course for ServiceNow administrators and consultants who need to implement and administer ServiceNow Discovery.

The course explains how Discovery captures IP-enabled configuration items and maps their relationships and dependencies in the ServiceNow CMDB. Through demonstrations and hands-on labs, learners work with MID Servers, credentials, Windows and Linux server discovery, network device discovery, application discovery, horizontal discovery patterns, asset and CI relationships, and common troubleshooting techniques.

Note: The instructor-led version of this course includes labs. The on-demand version does not.

  • ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals or equivalent experience (recommended)
  • Knowledge of network protocols and terminology (recommended)
  • CMDB Fundamentals (highly recommended)
  • Scripting in ServiceNow (highly recommended)

#1. What experience do I need before taking this course? 

Learners are recommended to have completed ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals or have equivalent platform experience. Knowledge of network protocols and terminology is also recommended. Completing CMDB Fundamentals and Scripting in ServiceNow before attending is highly recommended.

#2. Does the on-demand version of this course include labs? 

No. Hands-on labs are only available in the instructor-led version of this course. The on-demand version does not include lab exercises.

#3. Will I get hands-on practice during the course? 

Yes. Extensive hands-on lab exercises are included in every module, and participants work in their own student instance loaded with demonstration data throughout all three days.

#4. Does this course lead to a certification?

Yes. Upon completing the course, learners receive a voucher to take the Certified Implementation Specialist – Discovery exam. The voucher may require payment. Full details are available in the Certification FAQ on ServiceNow University.

Objectives

This course helps learners understand how to configure, run, extend, and troubleshoot ServiceNow Discovery in support of CMDB and infrastructure visibility.

Learners will explore how to:

  • Tour the Discovery and CMDB environment and validate MID Server setup
  • Run Discovery and configure credentials and behaviors for Windows, Linux, and network device discovery
  • Work with ports, probes, IP services, classifications, trigger probes, and CI identification troubleshooting
  • Configure process classification, process identification, and application-to-application mapping
  • Manage asset and CI relationships using Asset Discovery and Agent Client Collector for Visibility
  • Extend horizontal Discovery patterns for Windows servers, Linux servers, and SNMP classifiers
  • Build and troubleshoot application discovery patterns
  • Configure and review CMDB Health properties and the CMDB Health Dashboard
  • Apply common Discovery troubleshooting techniques

Discovery Fundamentals is a three-day instructor-led course designed for ServiceNow administrators and consultants who need to implement and administer ServiceNow Discovery.
